ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot program developed by the AI research lab OpenAI, which can interact with users through messages. After being made available for free use in late November 2022, it has already surpassed 100 million active users in just two months. This achievement took TikTok about 9 months to reach and Instagram took 2 and a half years, demonstrating the popularity of ChatGPT.
Now, a third-party team (not affiliated with OpenAI) has created a Discord bot using ChatGPT’s API, allowing users to chat with ChatGPT in Discord channels. This article will teach you how to use ChatGPT in Discord.
Creating Your Own Discord Server
To invite the ChatGPT bot to your Discord server, you must first have “Manage Server” permissions or be the owner of the server.

Use the App Directory to find and add the ChatGPT bot to your server
Do you feel lonely chatting with the ChatGPT bot on its webpage? Do you want to watch interactions with ChatGPT with a group of people? Now, a third-party team has created a Discord bot using ChatGPT’s API, which you can use.
In late October 2022, Discord launched the “App Directory” feature, which allows you to search for Discord bots that have been reviewed and approved by the Discord developer community.

Open the App Directory
Next, enter the keyword “ChatGPT” in the App Directory. You will see several bots, none of which are officially released by OpenAI, but are applications created by third-party teams using the ChatGPT API. Here, we choose the first blue ChatGPT bot, which is the most widely used.
Search for ChatGPT in the App Directory
Then select “Add to Server” and complete a series of permissions required for the bot to operate, inviting the bot to the server.

ChatGPT Bot Command List
Basically, if it’s just for fun, you only need to use one command: “/chat”, in which you only need to fill in two types of messages:
- Box 1 in the figure below: Message* – What you want to say to ChatGPT.
- Box 2 in the figure below: Mode – Choose ChatGPT’s version. This bot currently supports the following versions:
- For Free users: You can use GPT-3 and GPT-3.5; there is also support for Open Assistant (oasst-sft-1-pythia-12b), which is an Open Assistant project initiated by the AI research community. However, Open Assistant currently only supports English conversations.
- For Premium users: You need to upgrade to Advanced Membership to use GPT-4.
Commands for Conversing with ChatGPT
After typing, wait a while to see ChatGPT’s response. Since this is being used in a Discord channel, other community members who have permission to view this channel can also discuss and converse with ChatGPT in this channel.
